Life of marketing guy in India

A good product doesn’t need marketing “ but even though manufacturers have one in million defects they need to promote their product through marketing team and sell through sales team in order to overcome the competition exist in Indian market. Though all the departments are contributing to bring out the valuable product at the end of the day if the product doesn’t sell then everyone will suffer so we can say sales people are heart of the brand .Your brand is evaluated by the customer based on your sales person attitude and his skills.

In India mostly men are into direct sales and marketing and women are into office sales to support the field sales people. Nowadays even c grade products are also hiring graduates or post graduates to do direct sales due to over flooded graduates in India.

All the sales  people are constantly under pressure they have to coup up with their boss and with customers since customer is important to business he has to listen, respond, act whatever the customer is saying .Most of the companies are not putting that much concern towards sales people simply imposing huge targets on individual will never help the company.

I too had gone through sales profile in my company, after observing the day to day activities of sales people from Mumbai, Chennai and got some additional info from Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad I am putting down this.

Their starting time purely depends on the type of customers for example if you are selling concrete you cannot go to site at 9 clock because you won’t find the engineer so they turn up there at 10 in the same sense for all products.

If you are a sales person then you are supposed to have a two wheeler and thank god most of the companies reimbursing the petrol allowances .If you don’t know to ride a bike then you are not eligible even if you have good qualification. You can identify the sales person easily in roads after 10am, if a guy is riding with backpack, helmet, full sleeved shirt, formal shoe, piece of cloth covering his face, high mileage bike then 98% he is a sales person rushing to save him and his company.

After reaching the customer place they cannot expect a respect from the security person at the gate even though he is a MBA graduate and having good reputation in his own office if he say he is a sales person security takes at least 10 seconds to think on you .That moment is crucial for the sales person or else he will simply say “sir is not here or in meeting”-happened many times to me.

Once he passed the first god he has to meet the client may be from purchase department or a decision maker in a firm, he has to simply explain his product with good communication skill if they feel you are not communicating well it will surely reflect on your conversion so communication is the key factor for a marketing person. Client will bargain to save his company wallet and the sales person try to save his company wallet that’s why most of the company give quotation higher than the actual price after bargaining they go for concession. Once the order is confirmed he has to follow up with the customer.

Once the order is confirmed he will be the happiest person in his company than the people from operations or purchase, he knows how it feels.

Since they are roaming in hot sunlight most of the sales people are taking break from 1:00pm to 3:00pm in the nearby places and having their lunch over there. You can find the sales people at this time in Mumbai local railway stations and in Chennai mostly in parks like Natesan park T-nagar and some other parks in the city .In working days you can find the sales people from different companies turning up at parks to relax and combat the heat.

After 3:00pm one by one slowly start to get back to the business and the day continues with tea or juice in the nearby places.

After three most of the sales persons don’t go for meeting new clients or for leads they go to meet their existing clients for collecting payments, bills or stuffs related to that.

Around 5’O clock some starts to go back to their office to report the day or some start for home. Mostly they are so much tired due long journey on an average a sales guy in my company travels for 53km in a day.

Yes, naturally sales job is married to stress but there are some companies adding extra pressure on them like

  1. Setting more targets.
  2. Monitoring them through GPS.
  3. No incentives.
  4. Holding the salary for outstanding’s.
  5. No perks like lunch allowances and travel allowances.
  6. More working time.

Companies should look into the stress a sales person is undergoing than the other employee in the organisation and should consider to provide more allowances and create a smooth environment for conversion.

It’s not only the sales person job to sell the product but the company should also do adequate marketing to create a brand awareness among their potential clients which will help the sales team to sell the product.

There is a taboo in our country if you are a sales person then you will become impotent. May be some because they couldn’t handle the stress but not all.

I met few sales person in my arena and they are still complaining about their job though they are seven years experienced in the same field this is also one of the reason for extra stress if you don’t like the job don’t waste your time on complaining about the job simply stick to the job and try parallely for the job you like.

Lamenting is good for nothing and never help you.
