What is a green screen background?

A green screen is a chroma key backdrop that can be used to superimpose one image over another. The color green is used because it doesn’t appear in human skin tones, making it easier to key out.

Chroma key allows for the use of color information to isolate specific ranges, or “key” them.

Reasons you need to know about a green screen

Green screens offer a quick and easy way to change your video’s backdrop without having to film in front of a new location. This means that you can film indoors in a controlled environment, then change the background to make it look like you’re outdoors.

Also, green screens are great for creating special effects. By superimposing a character in front of a green screen, you can make them appear to be flying or falling through the air.

In short working with a green screen brings you:

  1. More creative freedom
  2. Improved quality
  3. Cost-saving shooting

We explain to you now how easy it is to use a green screen.

Step-by-Step Instructions to set up your green screen

Follow these steps and you will have your green screen set up in no time!

1. Choose your green screen/backdrop material

The first step is to choose a green screen. You can buy a green screen online or find a green sheet to use as your backdrop.

Green screens are a popular choice, but blue can be an option as well. Blue has the advantage of being less common in nature than green and will not cause chroma key spill.

Once you have your green screen, set it up in a well-lit room. Make sure the green screen has one color and that you don’t put it in front of a window as this will create a different kind of green at that part.

2. Set up your camera

The next step is to set up your camera. If you’re using a DSLR camera, then you’ll need to set it up on a tripod. If you’re using a phone camera, then you can just prop it up on a surface or use a tripod for your phone.

3. Position your subject in front of the green screen

Once your camera is set up, position your subject in front of the green screen. Make sure they’re well-lit and that there’s enough space between them and the green screen. The subject should not go outside of the green screen with any body parts.

4. Shoot your video

Now it’s time to shoot your video! Start by recording a few seconds of footage with your subject in front of the green screen. Then, stop recording and move your camera to shoot the background footage.

5. Edit your video

The last step is to edit your video and remove the background. You’ll need to use video editing software to key out the green background. We work with After Effects and if you like to give it a try with After Effects, I recommend you choose the option ‘Keylight + Key Cleaner + Advanced Spill Suppressor’. There are more programs to erase the green background (or blue screen) but After Effects gives us the most options as an editor.
