2020 Aluminum Extrusion Dimensions

In the 2020 profile, each of the four 20mm faces features an open T-slot for four T-slots. The sleek design makes it easy to keep clean and less prone to collecting dust and other contaminants. All fasteners in the 20 series are suitable for use with the 2020 profile. Machine guards, panel mount racks, workbenches, and displays can all benefit from the 2020 profile, a component of the least profile range 80/20 provides. Accessible from all sides, the four open T-slots can attach various accessories.

What is 2020 Aluminum Extrusion

T-slot framing consists of rectangular or square extruded aluminum, commonly 6105-T5 aluminum alloy, using a T-slot down the middle line of 1 or more sides. You can trace the T-slot structural frame back to Donald C. Hennick, who was granted a US patent for his initial design in 1986 (#4,607,972).

Typically, T-slot framing is called 80/20 framing, named after among the most well-known T-slot framing companies, 80/20, Inc., whose name is derived from the “Pareto” or “80/20” principle. Despite the lack of a standardized definition for this framing process, producers have resolved on two groups of products, each with several series that are interoperable with those of other companies.

V-slot rails are a variant of T-slot profiles manufactured by such extrusion equipment used for linear movement in a 3d printer or CNC machine. V slot wheels are well-slotted into V-shaped framing channels.

How strong is the 2020 aluminum extrusion?

The 2020 alloy is an aluminum alloy often used to make different structures and parts, such as extruded shapes for the industry. It is known for being strong for its weight and easy to work with.

Mostly, it’s made of aluminum (91–95%) and a little amount of copper (1-2%), manganese (0.5–1.2%), and magnesium (0.5 — 1.0%). Different alloy tempers, like T3, T4, and T6, change their strength and other traits.

The 2020 aluminum alloy strength relies on some things, such as the type of alloy used, how the material was heated, and how it was made. In general, the 2020 metal has a pretty high level of strength. Most of the time, the tensile strength of 2020 metal is around 310 MPa or 45,000 psi.

This number can change, though, based on how the alloy is made and how it has been heated. For instance, the T6 temper, a solution that is heat-treated and artificially aged, has the most power of the 2020 alloy tempers, as the T3 temper, which is a solution heat-treated and cold-worked, has the least strength but the most flexibility.

Tensile strength is just one way to measure how strong a material is. Other properties, like yield strength, shear strength, compressive strength, impact strength, and fatigue strength, are also important based on the application.

As was already said, the 2020 alloy comes in different tempers, changing its mechanical qualities and making it good for different uses.

Take away

Aluminum is among the most common extruded materials, and it can be made to fit the needs of different industries. But the 2020 aluminum extrusion measurements are the most common and widely used for building and building structures.
